Submission of forms and account activation

To obtain CERN and ATLAS accounts you will need to be registered on the CERN HR database, for which see Craig Buttar (room 482, c.buttar@physics.gla.ac.uk).

In order to submit completed forms, see Valerie Flood (room 479, v.flood@physics.gla.ac.uk). The registration process can take a few days. If registration is required urgently, you can e-mail atlas.secretariat@cern.ch or call + 41 22 767 42 explaining your situation. Other useful contacts are Connie Potter (connie.potter@cern.ch) and Shamila Silbert-Urwicz (shamila.silbert.urwicz@cern.ch). It should be noted that Connie Potter or Shamila Silbert-Urwicz might leave the secretariat shortly. Thus, it is best to e-mail atlas.secretariat@cern.ch in order to account for these possible staff changes. You might also consult the current ATLAS Secretariat webpage for more information, which you can find within the ATLAS webpages.

Once you are registered with CERN, you will receive an e-mail containing your CERN e-mail address, your login name and your passcode. In order to fully activate your account, you must log on to http://cern.ch/cernaccount within three days to do the following:

  • Complete a short online course on Security Training and Computer Rules.
  • Sign the CERN Computing Rules.
  • Change your passcode.

If you wish to check whether you are on the ATLAS members' list (before attempting to activate your account) you can check the the full members list or this search utility. If you are asked for a login, the "generic ATLAS credentials" are to be used (ask if you do not know what this means).

Getting an lxplus account

Running at CERN, lxplus is an alternative to running Athena jobs locally.

Everything you ever wanted to know about setting up an account on lxplus but were afraid to ask can be found here:

you must be an ATLAS user to set up an account on lxplus. If you do not have an account, then follow the instructions above.

For new group members, Craig Buttar will sign your registration forms. If you are a student, your Funding Council Contract and a letter from the head of group, Tony Doyle should be evidence enough of your association to the department.

Using your lxplus account

Everything else you want to know about running on lxplus at CERN can be found on the ATLAS Beginner's Workbook. This tends to be kept up-to-date, for latest releases etc., and is maintained by Steve Lloyd . You can log in to lxplus as follows:

ssh [CERNusername]@lxplus.cern.ch
