IT Overview
The following gives an overview of PPE IT and some departmental and university wide IT services.
Accounts
A PPE group member will have serveral accounts:
The Email, GUPHYSICS and PPE account will be setup as part of getting started in the PPE group. Other accounts will require deliberate action to setup.
Information / Documentation Sources
This TWiki Web (the IT Web) accessable at
https://ppes8.physics.gla.ac.uk/twiki/bin/view/IT/WebHome
covers PPE specific IT issues. Please take the time to look at the TWiki for IT information. If the layout of the TWiki is confusing then please use the TWiki search function. The search link is to the upper part of the left hand sidebar of TWiki pages. The TWiki has several other Webs (ATLAS,
DetDev,
ScotGrid) and well as the TWiki Web which contains documentation on using the TWiki.
For departmental matters there is the [[http://www.physics.gla.ac.uk/ITMatters/][IT Matters] web site, which amongst other things has the list of wireless access codes.
University wide the main page for Computing Service is
http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/it/
.
Printing
The group has a small printer room (484) which contains colour and black and white printers. These are available from linux, windows and osx. The
GroupPrinting page and subpages detail how to use and install these printers.
Storage
The PPE file servers store peoples home directories (/home/xxx) and data directories (/data/xxx) for the different experiments. These are available (automatically) via nfs on the linux desktops and via samba in the windows desktops. See
FileStorage.
Files in users home directories are backed up overnight and keep for upto six months. See
Backups. The
/data
areas are not backed up, with the exception of
/data/ppemgr01
and
/data/www01
which are backed up.
System Manager
The PPE IT System Manager is Andrew Pickford, office 473. Email should be sent to
